Planting the Seed: 5 Steps to Start Your Business with Confidence

Starting your business is like planting a seed. At first, it might feel like you’re working in the dark, hoping it will grow. But just like a seed needs soil, water, and sunlight to thrive, your business needs the right tools, mindset, and strategy to sprout into success. If you’re in the early days of your entrepreneurial journey, keep reading, you might find this post helpful. Let’s explore the five steps to start strong, grow steadily, and feel confident about the path you’re on.

1. Define Your “Why”
In the thought provoking book Start with Why”, Samuel Sinek said it best “People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it”.

If you haven’t already, ask yourself “Do I believe in what I’m doing?”

This simple yet powerful question can help you understand if what you’re doing is in alignment with who you are. If you don’t believe in what you’re doing,  how will anyone else?
Every great business starts with a clear purpose. Ask yourself: Why am I starting this business? Who do I want to serve? Your “why” will become your guiding light when things get tough. Write it down and keep it somewhere visible to remind yourself of the bigger picture.

2. Start Small, Dream Big
It’s easy to get caught up in the desire for perfection before launching. But the truth is, perfection doesn’t exist. Ask yourself: Is it really perfection you're after, or is it the vulnerability and fear of putting yourself out there that’s holding you back?

Take a moment to dig deeper—where is this fear coming from? Write it down and uncover what you’re really afraid of. By bringing those fears to the surface, you can begin to rewrite the inner narrative that’s keeping you stuck.

Once you understand the root of your perfection paralysis, shift your focus to what you can control right now. Start small, but think big. This means developing a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) or testing your idea in its simplest form. Your business will grow and evolve as you do.

But none of that will happen unless you find the courage to take the first step and make it happen!

3. Get Organized
In the germination stage, staying organized can make or break your progress. I personally find that I can allow myself to be more creative if I don’t have to focus on the structure every time. Easily finding your content and organizing your thoughts are helpful when you need to quickly jot down ideas in the moment, or reflect back to gain insight on previous ideas.

For that I have always found these apps to be the most helpful to organize the logistics:

Plan as if you're already operating at full capacity. Don’t wait until you’re overwhelmed to put systems in place—start implementing them now.

4. Surround Yourself with the Right Support
Starting a business can feel lonely, but you don’t have to do it alone. Find the person that can be your rock, that you can feel safe they will support and encourage you.

Join communities of like-minded entrepreneurs or seek out a mentor who’s been where you are. Be mindful of who you share your big ideas with, I have personally made the mistake in my excitement of sharing my big idea with people that were skeptical, and in the early stages you can be impressionable. Wait to share your news until you believe in your vision first.

Consider also curating your social feeds to be positive fuel to keep you motivated and inspired to move forward. The germination stage of starting a business it’s important to have the best growing conditions for your seed to sprout!

Having a support system and positive feed can keep you motivated and provide valuable insights along the way.

If you're looking to network and learn, here are two standout events to consider:

  • Denver Startup Week: This free, week-long event in Denver is an amazing opportunity for leaders and entrepreneurs to connect, share experiences, and gain valuable insights.

  • Serious Business (New Orleans): Tailored for beauty professionals, this event delivers innovation, inspiration, and actionable leadership tips you won’t want to miss.

5. Embrace a Growth Mindset
“Instant” is not an ingredient for a successful recipe! Success doesn’t happen overnight, and mistakes are simply part of the journey. Embrace every “failure” as an opportunity to learn and evolve.

Pay attention to your thoughts—when you catch yourself saying, “Why is this happening to me?” you might be spiraling into a victim mindset. Instead, choose gratitude for what you’re experiencing. No matter how challenging the struggle, you have the power to decide how you show up and shift your perspective. Feel empowered by the fact that you always have a choice, and recognize how fortunate you are to have this experience to grow from.

Reading biographies of business leaders who started from the ground up can be incredibly inspiring. Their stories remind us that no matter what we’re facing, we share similar struggles, and there’s always something to learn. A great book to check out is Delivering Happiness

Remember, the most successful entrepreneurs are those who remain resilient and are willing to adapt and evolve through their experiences.

In Conclusion; the germination stage of your business is both exciting, challenging, maybe a little overwhelming at times, but it’s also where you lay the foundation for the success of your business. Stay strong, and keep going!

With the right mindset, tools, and support, your business will grow into something you’re proud of.
